What is a facial peel?

Okay hear me out, I know the term “facial peel” sounds spooky, and sometimes people have a really terrible first experience with peels BUT really, a peel is just an AHA or BHA exfoliant, aka just a chemical. One of the benefits of going to a licensed esthetician for a chemical peel is because we know how to prep your skin so the products you use at home don’t interfere with the peel you’re getting from us! So, today we’re going to breakdown a facial peel so it’s hopefully much less scary for you!

What is a facial peel?

Basically, it’s just a stronger chemical acid being put on the skin. I mentioned before they are AHA or BHA exfoliants, those stand for “alpha hydroxy acid” or “beta hydroxy acid.”

Why do I need a facial peel?

Facial peels help with textures on your skin like fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, pigmentation. It renews the cells in your face to shed the dead cells and reveal the beautiful baby ones or to boost the cells that are already there. The process is crystalizing skin cells and shedding them off! Also, depending on the peel and active ingredient they can also be used to control oil production and inflammation as well!

4 Benefits of a facial peel

  1. Keeps your skin FRESH and GLOWING

  2. Keeps acne bacteria under control

  3. Keeps pigmentation under control

  4. Helps to speed up cellular renewal (as we age, it slows down)

Generally, getting peels regularly helps to maintain the skin we need to shed the old off and let the new sine bright and fresh. It will also better allow your skincare products to penetrate the skin. The biggest thing here is consistency. It takes time to see results, especially to get rid of things like pigmentation.

How should I prep for a facial peel?

Every esthetician is different, so consult with your service provider for their rules. I have my clients stop all active ingredients 48 hours in advance so your skin gets a break and so we can use stronger active ingredients during your session. It depends on your end goal and your service provider ultimately.

What’s aftercare look like for a facial peel?

Calming, hydrating products for sure!! Again, ultimately your service provider will have their own aftercare steps for you to follow. And if you have any questions, always ask!
