Esthetician Life

What is an esthetician? What kind of schooling/training do you undergo? How long did it take you to finish?

An esthetician is a facial specialist, body waxer, makeup artist, lash technician, sunless tanning specialist and someone who makes you feel beautiful! I went to school for about 5 months. You have to complete a certain amount of hours before finishing school! I had to get 600 hours! We did classroom setting learning then hands on! We learned the basics on how to wax and do facials! It was a great journey! School opened me up from my shell because when you’re waxing someone, you get all up close and personal! That might have been what surprised me the most! But now, it’s one of the things I most enjoy because it makes me not shy or timid!

Why did you decide to become an esthetician? When did you decide? Did you always know you wanted to be one?

Okay, if we’re being honest here, I became an esthetician because I didn’t want to go to a 4-year school. MY senior year of high school, I hated every minute of it so I knew I didn’t want to go to school for much longer. There was a time where I wanted to be a math teacher BUT I was like yeah NOPE not the schooling. I’ve always liked hair stuff and doing my baby’s and Barbie’s hair. I also suffered with pretty bad acne at that age, so when I learned about esthetician school, specifically the skin side of things, I was in!

Tell us about your first esthetician gig. What was it like?

My first gig was at a day spa in a bigger city next to my hometown about 45 minutes away. It was a great first job teaching me a lot! I really learned how to do services. But something always felt off. In the back of my head, I always knew I wanted to be my own boss!

Did you always dream of having your own spa? When did you know you wanted your own facility?

I saw my parents own a business growing up and isn't it the dream to be your own boss?! So I guess I’ve always wanted my own business! In the future, I dream about being a part-time stay-at-home-mom and just to have flexibility. After school, and my first job working for someone else, I knew I wanted my own place! The drive, the hours were awful and I dreamed of being my own boss!

What’s next for you/Glisten & Glow. What is your ultimate dream for your business?

What’s next? Another machine! I’m home to get a machine that can zap skin tags, broken capillaries, sun spots and more! I also want to keep bringing in high-quality skin lines that I’ve always dreamed of carrying! I also want to keep learning and growing my craft. I’d also love to bring on another treatment like micro-channeling. The ultimate “what’s next” though, is helping more people with their skin and in feeling confident!
