Waxing 101: Everything You Need to Know Before (and After) Your Appointment
POV: You just booked your wax—whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, here’s everything you need to know to make your appointment smooth (literally).
First things first… it’s totally normal to feel a little nervous. But let me remind you—I wax coochies for a living. I’ve seen it all, and I promise, you’re in good hands! Now, let’s get into the FAQs:
How long does my hair need to be before waxing?
If it’s your first wax, you don’t need to stress about timing too much. But for regular waxers:
✔ Brazilian: 3-4 weeks of growth is ideal
✔ Legs & Underarms: About 2 weeks or hair as long as a grain of rice
How do I prep for my wax?
You don’t need to do anything fancy, but here are a few key things to keep in mind:
🚫 Skip lotions and oils on the area before your wax
💊 Take an antihistamine if you’re worried about pain
🍷 Avoid alcohol—it thins your blood and can make waxing more painful
🩸 If it’s that time of the month, lightly exfoliate a few days before for easier hair removal
💧 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Your skin will thank you
What should I wear?
Loose-fitting or cotton clothing is best, especially after a Brazilian. Let your skin breathe!
Post-Wax Care: What to Expect & What to Avoid
Right after your wax, you might notice some redness, sensitivity, or even a little bleeding—totally normal! In fact, bleeding means we got the hair out from the root (which is exactly what we want!).
To keep your skin happy, you’ll need proper aftercare. I highly recommend:
✔ An exfoliator + hydrator to prevent ingrowns (check out my favorite aftercare products here)
✔ A bath mitt (better than a loofah—mold & bacteria-free!)
✔ A pH-balanced wash for Brazilian waxes
For the first 24-48 hours, avoid:
❌ Sweating or working out
❌ Sexual intercourse
❌ Swimming in pools, lakes, oceans, or hot tubs
❌ Tight-fitting clothing or underwear
❌ Using any products on the waxed area (unless recommended by your esti bestie)
When will I see regrowth?
Around two weeks post-wax, you’ll notice some regrowth—this is totally normal! Expect a little itchiness, which is your cue to start exfoliating. There shouldn’t be any pain, and redness should fade within a few hours.
Over time, waxing will thin out your hair and slow down regrowth—aka, less maintenance for you!
When should I come back?
For the best results, aim for every 4-6 weeks. Sticking to a regular waxing schedule helps keep your hair on a cycle, making each wax easier and more effective.
